I'm embarrassed to see how long it's been since I posted on this blog! My excuses are many, but none really work when I see the length of time...however, my little company has been so busy that I haven't had time to do much of anything else but make jewelry! That's a good thing, but I have had to neglect my other passions, like blogging, cooking, reading, and hanging out with my girlfriends :(.

So Aunt Peg's Jewelry will be cutting back on the number of events I participate in, and taking things a little slower so that I can enjoy more time with my family, and get back to some of the other fun things in my life!

I admit that I've developed a BIG Pinterest addiction, I am in love with the huge amount of creative crafts, helpful hints and tips, the awesome recipes, clothing styles, funny cartoons and quips, and just everything I find on there!

So, this being said, here is one of the great tutorials I found via Pinterest. A fabulous, simple tutorial on turning your photo's or favorite images into Shrinky Dink jewelry!

Ink jet-printable shrink plastic (clear or white)– Michael’s and Pearl usually have it

Oven or toaster oven

Cookie sheet

Parchment paper — check the grocery store next to the plastic wrap and tinfoil

Well I found a treasure! happytogether.blogspot.com is an adorable blog, created by Jessica Fediw, a fun, crafty woman, who is also the wife of a dedicate Coast Guard guy, and a mother! Busy life!
The tutorial she has created is for making clay flower jewelry. Although I haven't yet had the time to give these a try, they are most assuredly on my to do list. I'm looking forward to designing some new jewelry pieces that will include these flowers!

My Grandma's hands

The other day I received the following story in an email from a friend. It has stuck in my mind, and it really struck home to me as I read it. As I have gotten older, I have started to develop arthritis in my hands and some days making jewelry all day seems to be difficult, frustrating and slow going. I often drop things (ok all the time), and some days struggle to find the hand strength to do my work well.

I use my hands for my Jewelry business. I create my work through my hands. I take them for granted. They are a gift.

I think about all my hands do in a day, and remember this story. How lucky I am.

It has been thought provoking and so I want to share this story with you.

GRANDMA'S HANDS

This image was attached as part of the email.

Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. She didn't move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands.

When I sat down beside her she didn't acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if she was OK

Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was OK. She raised her head and looked at me and smiled. "Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking," she said in a clear voice strong.

"I didn't mean to disturb you, grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK," I explained to her.

"Have you ever looked at your hands," she asked.. "I mean really looked at your hands?"

I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making.

Grandma smiled and related this story:

"Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life.

"They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor.

They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child, my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off to war.

"They have been dirty, scraped and raw , swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special.

They wrote my letters to him and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse.

"They have held my children and grandchildren, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand.

They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer.

"These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of life.

But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side.

I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my grandma's hands and led her home.

When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and husband I think of grandma. I know she has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God.

I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face.

Show Us Wednesday~Week 2

If you remember, we are participating in a great linky party each week called SHOW US YOUR BUSINESS WEDNESDAYS, and after last weeks opening introduction, I have been doing more thinking about our business and what direction we want to take our business in. Then I discovered that the topic for this weeks post at Show Your Business is to share our business goals for 2011, and how our readers can help us achieve them... (wow! almost fortuitous don't you think?)

It's kind of a "no brainer" for us. We want our jewelry business to expand, selling more items, increasing our public persona, and making more money-right? Right! Yet there is so much more we want to do!
Aunt Peg's Jewelry currently participates in a program called KIVA, an outstanding organization that helps organize and oversee small business loans for women & men in 3rd world countries. You can invest as little as $25.00 towards a loan, or any larger amount you feel comfortable with (plus the money is returned to you as the loan pays off, you just don't earn interest.)! Megan and I have both been participating in the ventures for 6+ years, and we love it, and each time our money was paid back we have just re-loaned the money. So it is natural for us to give a portion of our sales to this organization-a way for us to

PAY IT FORWARD.

Anyway, 1 thing we really want to do is increase Aunt Peg's level of participation with this worthwhile cause, and that means we need to increase our business bottom line.

We also want to expand our other 2 blogs:
AUNT PEGS RECIPE BOX .BLOGSPOT.COM-where we're hoping to publish a cookbook this year.
PEGS SISTER SAL.BLOGSPOT.COM-by spending more time with creative crafting, we hope to be able to make all of our Christmas gifts for the 2011 holidays (this one may be a stretch goal).

We have a ton of other goals to accomplish, but these are the 3 big ones we really want to accomplish.
THE OBVIOUS FACTOR in getting our readers to help us reach these goals is to spread our business info around. The more our business name and blogs are recognized, the higher our sales will go. We know that once someone buys any of our jewelry, they seem to fall in love with their piece's, and they truly love the prices, so we just want people to recommend us, try one of our jewelry piece's, or place our buttons on their blogs.
BUT WE HAVE TO SAY THAT WE LOVE ALL OF OUR READERS, ALL THE TIME, AND NO MATTER WHAT! We appreciate the time you spend just stopping by our blogs, let alone actually reading these huge posts of mine---my mouth (and typing skills) are running out of control!

I am always trying to find new ways to get my small business recognized in the big wide world, and I spend a lot of time brainstorming (hence the reason my business is still tiny). But today I found a new way that I know will help my business grow!!!

Introduce yourself, your family, and your business

My name is Amber (I am the designated author of the blogs), and my business partner's name is Megan. We are 2 friends who have known each other for more than 16 years. We met at a summer job and have been tight friends ever since.

WE MAKE JEWELRY!
(and every item we sell is under $20.00!)

We started our business in August of 2009. We create jewelry of all kinds; earrings, bracelets, necklaces, beaded watchbands, charms, chain necklaces plus more, and we always have a few other things like quick and simple gifts, wrapping items, and some truly eclectic and fun things.

Our business is named after my Aunt Peg-you can read her bio here.

We do a lot of home parties (like Tupperware and Pampered Chef), and would like to really expand our web presence. We have an Etsy Shop, which has really started to take off in the last few months, and we hope to expand our inventory there over the next 2 months.

Many of our items are 1 of a kind, and we do custom pieces all the time. We do recreate items depending on their demand, and we make some stuff in larger quantity if we are running a sale of feature on it.

We do a periodic sale campaign through email that our followers can sign up for (top right of the side bar).

Megan is currently taking a sabbatical from our jewelry making business while she is in Medical School, and she also works a full time job. She commutes 45 minutes to her job where she is an administrator for a Personal Empowerment Company, and then spends her remaining time attending school, studying, studying, and studying. She is currently single, and claims she is likely to stay that way because she has no time for men-ha ha ha-just look at her! She fights them off in droves! She has a BA from the University of Utah.

I have been married for over 23years to my favorite guy-Reed, I have 2 grown children, Chase-22, and Chelsey-20, and they are required to work for Aunt Peg's as slave labor.

Pearl Bracelet Tutorial

Here is another great tutorial on making jewelry. I truly love Jessa's Blog at Holiday Haven, she has great idea's excellent links and some of the funnest linky parties!

Stop by there immediately!

Jessa posted this last Christmas, but it's a timeless tutorial, and a wonderful way to make a special gift for your favorite people during the holidays!

Start with your favorite beads. I used 2 kinds: a larger silver pearl and a smaller white pearl.

Two strands of clear stretch cord.

A beading needle with a wide opening.

String using an alternating pattern.

I tied a knot in each end and then tied the ends together. My beading magazine recommends a surgeons knot (which you can google), but I had tons of trouble with that so I just kept tying knots until I was SURE it wasn't (ever) going to come untied.

And then apply a dot of superglue to the knot for extra reassurance.

And then to hide the knot, and give this a fun look, add a ribbon bow.

See? What a wonderful and simple gift!

And of course you will need several for yourself...

Making A Necklace

Cute and brilliant Tracy from Tracy's Trinkets & Treasures has an amazing blog full of inspiration and awesome tutorials. We saw this tute and instantly knew it was one we wanted to share!
It's an excellent DIY instruction for creating beautiful necklaces or bracelets-and there are photo's! We love photo's-they are beyond helpful-excellent quality-great details!

Tracy's Necklace Tutorial

This is most of my collection. I recommend these containers that can be found at most craft stores. It makes it easy to store and see your beads.

I would like to have better jewelry tools. I have a mini tool kit that I use. It is also much easier to make jewelry if you get a board that will help you measure and see your design before you build your necklace.

I use this nylon coated wire from Hobby Lobby. Sometimes I buy the one that is “Best” flexibility instead of just good.

These are my favorite necklace clasps from Hobby Lobby. I rarely buy pure silver because of the cost. You also need crimp beads.

Use the board to measure the wire. I like my necklaces to be around the 8 to 9 mark. It depends on your neck size and how long you want the necklace to be. Always give your self at least an inch and a half on either end of extra wire to be able to attach the clasps.

Cut your wire with wire cutters.

I chose simple beads so I could make this necklace easily. The bigger the beads the faster you can make it.

I placed my pearls on the board and then added the pink beads in between.

Here are some ideas for a pendant for this necklace. I didn’t use one though.

If you use a pendant then you want to center it. I removed a pearl so that the beads would be even on either side of the pendant.

Place a crimp bead onto the nylon wire.

Add the clasp. And then put the wire back into the crimp to form a loop.

Push the crimp bead close to the clasp and use either a crimper or some flat pliers to smash the crimp bead onto the wire.

Start adding beads.

When you get all of your beads onto the wire then you need to add the other end of the clasp. First you have to put on another crimp bead.

Make sure that you pull the crimp bead and the clasp down next to the bead and crimp.

Trim the wire long enough to fit it into the bead so it will stay but short enough so you can work with it by bending it and getting it into the bead hole.

I hope this helps you make some great jewelry. If you want to make multi-stranded necklaces then you just add more wires into the same crimp bead.

Button Bracelet Tutorial

At the beginning we were just going to show a couple of pictures from Ashley's tutorial, but she has done such an amazing job of explaining the steps and using pictures for visuals, that we didn't have the heart to cut up the tute!
Ashley's blog is so creative and fun to read! She combines stories and events from her personal life as well as showing her amazing talents! And then there is her ETSY SHOP! We loved browsing through her amazing creations and ooohing and aaahing over every one!

Button Bracelet Tutorial with Lobster Clasp

Step One:

Supply List {see pictures}:

Favorite Buttons

Crimper Tool {purchased at Michaels}

2 Crimp Beads {purchased at Michaels}

2 4mm Jump Rings {purchased at Michaels}

1 Lobster Clasp {purchased at Michaels}

Rope of your choice {be sure it fits in your crimp beads}

Scissors

Step Two:

Once you have gathered all your supplies, place one of the crimp beads on the end of your rope.

Now, use your crimper tool to "smash" your crimper bead around the rope, securely in place.

Next, attach one of your jump rings to the end of the ring on your crimp bead using your crimper tool {this jump ring is what your lobster clasp will attach to in a future step}.

Measure the length you want your bracelet to be so that you know how many buttons you will need.

STEP THREE:

Begin to thread/attach your buttons by putting the rope up the hole on the bottom side and then down through the top side of each button. I like to leave a bit of space between each button so that they won't overlap.

Continue threading the buttons. So long as you don't choose buttons with large holes, the buttons should stay in place without an adhesive.

Cut the excess rope and prepare to add your second crimp bead.

Follow the same step for attaching the crimp bead and jump ring on the other side of rope. NOTE: Before closing the second jump ring, be sure to attach your lobster clasp {see next 2 pictures}.

And Wa-La! You have your very own button bracelet with a semi-professional clasp! There you have it--this is about as complicated as my jewelry making will ever get:

The Make & Take Event Is Over... :(

We loved hosting our first Make & Take Event.

We had a great time, and we learned some great tips to use at the next M&T party!

We appreciate our customers who came out and participated,

we love spending time with all of you!

Beth Anne is always referring business our way!

We had some young entrepreneurs set up shop and selling candy, snacks, bottled water, and adorable small purses! They are the most charming girls!
Thanks Brinley and McKaylee for makin this event fun!

Another great "sales rep" for Aunt Peg's, Jodie is really contemplating the design of her cluster charm...should she make changes?

Julie has never made jewelry before (or so she claims), and she really worked hard at doing some awesome design work!
Julie might also qualify for our "#1 sales rep"! She really brings us great customers, not to mention her own purchases...

McKaylee, the other team member of the entrepreneur store.
She is an amazing jewelry designer! She created some really great pieces.

I met a cute woman who lives in Heber Utah, and knows & has worked with some of my cousins who live in that area too. And she is the mother of our hostess! Go figure... Heber Utah is about 1 hour from Herriman Utah, but it's located in the Wasatch Mountains, so it seems far away).
